Teaching and testing life skills reading

Share on Facebook Share on LinkedIn Share on Twitter

In this webinar, K. Lynn Savage focuses on five different reading task types and strategies for teaching those skills that ESL students need in order to be successful on tests that assess life skills reading.

The five task types mirror the ones that CASAS uses to assess reading:

(1) forms
(2) tables, charts, graphs and maps
(3) text
(4) signs, price tags, ads and product labels
(5) diagrams
Three different skill areas related to task types that have text will be addressed: (1) recognizing the structure of the format, (2) identifying key words in questions, and (3) finding key words in the display. A fourth skill area will address preparing students for picture displays. Finally, the presenter will illustrate the wealth of resources in the Ventures series that prepare students to be successful when confronted with these five task types.
