In this webinar, Donna Price and Gretchen Bitterlin give a brief overview of College and Career Readiness Standards and demonstrate how they apply to adult English Language Learners.
The presenters begin with a brief history of the CCRS, explaining how they were created by the federal Office of Career, Technical, and Adult education in the United States with a goal of helping adult learners prepare for college work and professional careers. There are 31 anchor standards that answer the question of what our students should know/do to be college and career ready.
There are four major strands of the CCRS—reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. Each strand has several anchor standards and each anchor standard has level specific standards. Donna and Gretchen further break down specific anchor standards for each of the four major strands and get into greater detail about what those anchor standards mean for adult English Language Teaching.
After going over the CCRS in detail, Donna and Gretchen discuss how to recognize anchor standards not currently commonly addressed in ESL by skill area and outline a process by which teachers can determine the alignment of instructional materials with these important new standards.
