So now you’ve found the ‘wee’ words, but what do they all mean? Some of the words in this puzzle are very specific to Scotland and you may have never heard them being used before. Discover what they mean with our bitesize descriptions.
Bagpipes: a traditional Scottish instrument, from which you produce sound by blowing air into a leather bag and forcing it out through pipes.
Balmoral: (Balmoral Castle) the Scottish home of the Royal Family.
Burns: surname of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796). A celebration of his life and poetry takes place on January 25th each year: ‘Burns Night’.
Glasgow: a major city in Scotland.
Haggis: a traditional dish from Scotland consisting of different sheep’s organs cut up with onions and spices and cooked inside a sheep’s stomach.
Highland: a region in Scotland.
Hogmanay: in Scotland, the last day of the year and the parties to celebrate it (similar to New Year’s Eve celebrations).
Kilt: a skirt with many folds, made from tartan cloth and traditionally worn by Scottish men and boys.
Neeps: a root vegetable that, in Scotland, is traditionally cooked with ‘tatties’ (potatoes) and served alongside ‘haggis’.
Porridge: a thick, soft food made from oats boiled in mild or water, eaten hot for breakfast.
Shortbread: a type of sweet biscuit that contains a lot of butter.
Whisky: a strong, pale brown alcoholic drink, originally from Scotland and Ireland, made from grain such as barley, maize or rye.
