In this look at the results of the State of Teacher Development; our survey of thousands of ELT professionals from 90 different countries, we reveal just how much time and money is being spent on teacher development.
The survey showed that 63% of ELT professionals would like to spend more time on teacher development, that people are more likely to carry out teacher development activities in January, and that a whopping 71% still buy physical methodology books as part of their development.
How many hours per month do you engage with teacher development activities?
Our survey revealed that people spend 7.2 hours a month in total on TD activities. This equates to about one working day per month. Only 13% of respondents identified as spending more than 20 hours per month, or 4 hours a week. We also found that teachers in Ukraine spent the most amount of time on their teacher development, while ELT professionals in South Korea spent the least. How many methodology books have you bought in the past year?
With the increased focus on the opportunities that digital channels, resources and events provide teachers, it may seem surprising that 71% of respondents still purchase methodology books as part of their professional development. On top of this it seems that people are most likely to buy a lot of books or none at all.
We also saw that the majority of people spend on average of over £60 each year on books – in Belgium, 52% of respondents spend over £50 each year making them the biggest spenders!
When do you like to study
We found that people are most likely to engage in teacher development in January, and almost half stated their preference was to study in the evening. Do you have a set day a week that you like to study? Here are the most and least popular according to our survey:
