Craig discusses the oral communication needs that EAP learners have, especially when they move from a programme that you teach and move perhaps to an undergraduate subject. He covers comprehensibility, looking at what this actually means, as well as the relationship between comprehensibility and a students’ ability to communicate effectively. In addition to looking at pronunciation materials and methodology principles for dealing with EAP and pronunciation, Craig poses the question – should students aim to be like native speakers? This leads on to a presentation of research around tone of voice, the role it has to play in learning to speak English, and if tone is important.
