The 2019 Better Learning Conference took place at the famous Robinson College in Cambridge, but how much do you know about the college?
Here are our top 10 Robinson College facts!
1. The college was founded after the British philanthropist Sir David Robinson offered the university £17 million to establish a new college in Cambridge; this is one of the largest donations ever accepted by the university.
2. It was built in 1977 making it the newest college in Cambridge.3. The college was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1981.
4. As the newest college, it does not have many of the traditions of the older colleges. For example, students can walk on the grass in the college gardens.
5. Designed by the Scottish architectural firm Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, Robinson College’s main buildings are distinctive by the use of red bricks in their construction.
6. In November 2008 the college was included in the ’50 most inspiring buildings in Britain’ by The Daily Telegraph.
7. Of particular note are the library and chapel, the latter featuring stained-glass windows designed by John Piper.
8. The college is located a ten-minute walk west of the city centre, behind the University Library, near the science buildings in West Cambridge and the arts faculties on the university’s Sidgwick Site.
9. It stands on a 12.5-acre (5.1 ha) wooded site noted for its historical and horticultural interest.
10. Notable alumni include the comedian Robert Webb, the TV presenter Konnie Huq, politician Nick Clegg and the vice president of Google Matt Brittin.
