In July, we held our annual Better Learning Conference at Robinson’s College, Cambridge and Dr. Hayo Reinders came to discuss how ‘Learning Analytics’ can be used in language teaching.
Dr. Hayo Reinders is a TESOL Professor at Anaheim University, California, and is the Director of their doctoral programme. He is also Head of Education at Unitec and Editor of Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching. Hayo’s interests are in CALL, autonomy, and out-of-class learning, which are topics he explores at www.innovationinteaching.org. His most recent books are on teacher autonomy, teaching methodologies, and second language acquisition.
In his talk, Hayo discusses the relevancy of learning analytics in language teaching with practical examples for how you could utilise these in your teaching. Data is more accessible to us than ever before and we have more tools available that enable us to analyse this data without needing specialist knowledge. Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs (Siemens & Gašević, 2012, np).
