Meet Max, Oksi and Hunter! As a part of our support for teachers of Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers, we are continuing our series of exam vocabulary worksheets. Each worksheet introduces children to a unique character designed by children from around the world with fun exercises to help them prepare for their exams.
Last week, we introduced you to Frankie, Woody and Jo.This week, we introduce Max, Oksi and Hunter, designed by children in the UK, China and Russia. You can download these worksheets and find these and more resources on wordoffun.org.
Here are some ideas for introducing the worksheets with classes:
Meet Max – Pre A1 Starters
Share the Max worksheet with learners by giving out photocopies of pages 1-2 or sending it to their tablet or computer.
Point to Max in the family picture on page 1 and say: This is Max and this is Max’s family. How many brothers and sisters has Max got? (3 and one of them is a baby.)
For a follow up, you could go back to Max’s character card and talk about Max’s dislike. (He doesn’t like cleaning his room.) Learners could say one thing that they don’t like doing at home but is important because they should help at home.
Meet Oksi – A1 Movers
Prepare three sentences about yourself with like, love, enjoy. e.g. I like cooking new food. I love riding my bike. I enjoy taking photos of beautiful places. Write these in a table on the board or screen like the sentences about Oksi and her parrot on page 1.
| I | like | cooking | my bike. |
| love | taking photos | new food. | |
| enjoy | riding | of beautiful places. |
Ask learners to make three sentences using the parts.
Share the Oski worksheet with learners by giving out photocopies of pages 1-2 or sending it to their tablet or computer. Introduce Oksi and Sally and look at the two example sentences in the table together. Make sure learners have different colours to colour the square for the different sentences.
After exercise 2, students can ask their classmates about their answers. Remind them of useful language to do this: e.g. I like wearing baseball caps. What about you? My mum buys my clothes. Is that the same for you?
Meet Hunter – A2 Flyers
Play a fun game with animals. You can give learners more time to think by asking them to write their animals before you ask them to share them. Then, as a whole-class, learners say their animals in different ways.

Share the Hunter worksheet with learners by giving out photocopies of pages 1-2 or sending it to their tablet or computer.
Learners read about Hunter. Ask learners if they have seen a fox running and talk about other animals that are good at hiding.
Learners read about eagles and bees and complete the table in exercise 1 and then, after exercise 2, ask students to choose one
of the animals they have written, find out about it and write five sentences about it.
For the animal sentences, learners could choose one and write a dialogue and act it out.
Follow up ideas:
Learners can write their own character cards like the ones for Max, Oksi and Hunter, using a photo or drawing of themselves. Or, they could draw a new character and complete the card.
