CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning, and it is an educational approach that combines the teaching of a subject content area, such as Science, Geography, Mathematics or History, with the learning of an additional language. Using CLIL activities can develop students’ language skills while simultaneously deepening their understanding of the other areas’ contents.

CLIL and Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

When teaching through CLIL, teachers provide students with an immersive learning experience, where they can acquire language skills in a meaningful and authentic context as well as develop cognitive abilities. Therefore, it is relevant to consider how much Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is developed whenever students are exposed to integrated and meaningful learning experiences.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) refers to the process of acquiring and applying skills, attitudes, and knowledge that can help students:

  • understand and manage emotions.
  • set, and achieve goals.
  • show empathy for others.
  • establish positive relationships.
  • make responsible decisions.

SEL is increasingly recognized as a vital component of education because it encourages students’ character development, academic success, and well-being.

In the context of language learning, SEL plays an important role in creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment. It helps students build self-confidence, develop effective communication skills, and establish positive relationships with peers and teachers.

Combining CLIL with Social Emotional Learning provides an educational experience that not only develops language skills but also promotes personal and interpersonal growth. By recognizing the importance of both cognitive and socio-emotional aspects of learning, educators can create impactful language learning environments for their students.

Activities to help develop SEL skills

To succeed in language and content learning as well as develop SEL skills here are some activities tips:

  • Work on projects that integrate content learning with SEL goals. For example, students can work collaboratively to research and present a topic while also practising communication, teamwork, and self-management skills.
  • Incorporate cooperative learning structures and group work: Encourage collaboration and social interaction by incorporating cooperative learning structures into CLIL activities. Assign students to small groups where they can work together, solve problems, and practice essential SEL skills such as communication, empathy, and negotiation.
  • Provide opportunities for reflection and self-assessment: Give time for students to reflect on their learning experiences and assess their own SEL growth. Provide questions that encourage self-reflection, such as “How did you show empathy during this project?” or “What strategies did you use to manage your time?”
  • Integrate SEL-related discussions and activities within content lessons: These discussions can focus on topics like emotions, empathy, perspective-taking, or responsible decision-making. Use thought-provoking questions or case studies to stimulate conversations and encourage students to think critically about how SEL connects to the content they are learning.
  • Use technology tools to enhance SEL integration in CLIL activities. For instance, students can collaborate using digital platforms, engage in online discussions, or create multimedia projects that promote self-expression and self-awareness.
  • Cultivate a positive and inclusive classroom climate: Foster a positive and inclusive classroom climate that supports SEL by establishing clear expectations, promoting respect and empathy, and celebrating diversity. Create a safe space where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, emotions, and ideas.
  • Encourage student voice and choice: Provide opportunities for students to have a voice in their CLIL activities and projects. Allow them to make choices, set goals, and reflect on their learning journey. This autonomy and ownership can empower students and promote their social and emotional growth.

Why should we implement SEL in CLIL activities?

Consider that implementing SEL in CLIL activities is an ongoing process that requires intentional planning, continuous reinforcement, and adaptability. Therefore, it is worth trying to dedicate some of your lesson planning time to adding language and content-integrated activities in which students can develop some Social-Emotional skills.
